1. I would like to know how often i should water a lily plant i bought from a supermarket.

   Water when the top few inches are dry and when the pot feels light. Remove the decorative foil when watering andlet the water drain from the pot.Don’t let the roots sit in water, it will invite root rot.

2. My daughter bought a beautiful potted daffodil, hoping to keep it in her room. Within days, all the flowers died and the plant generally looks terrible. She tried finding info on the web, so I told her I would ask you and see what we could do for this poor plant!

   Hi Barbara,
   Potted daffodils will last about 14 days depending on the variety and temperature. They keep longer in a cool room no higher than 65F during the day and 45F-55F at night. You should buy them in their “pencil” stage when buds are still green or just starting to open for maximum longevity. If the plant is finished blooming I would suggest you let the foliage die back (if it is a daffodil) and replant it outdoors for next years blooming.

3. I RECENTLY BOUGHT A CALLA LILLY PLANT IN MARKS AND SPENCER. I HAVE HAD IT FOR THREE WEEKS AND SOME OF THE FLOWERS HAVE GONE BROWN AND WITHERED. THE LEAVES LOOK HEALTHY AND IT IS IN A BRIGHT POSITION AND WARM. PLEASE ADVISE HOW LONG I CAN EXPECT THE FLOWERS TO LAST AND WHAT TO DO WHEN THE FLOWERS HAVE FINISHED. IT IS NOT IN A DRAINING POT IT IS IN THE POT IN WHICH IT WAS PURCHASED. THANK YOU

   A potted Calla lily will usually bloom for 4-6 weeks. They do well in bright light in the winter months and partial shade in the summer. They prefer temperatures of 70-85F in summer and 60-75F in the winter/spring. Cooler temperatures will help the plant and flowers last longer. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Wet soil can lead to a fungus rot that affects the roots and rhizome, that is why you need to allow the water to drain from the pot. During active growth and blooming, feed your Calla every 2-3 weeks with a well-balanced fertilizer. When the plant, stops blooming and the leaves start to yellow and die back, reduce watering and let the soil dry. Clip off all brown foliage and store the slightly moist pot in a cool (42-45F), shady spot for a resting period. In late winter/spring, replant the tuber in fresh, loose soil for spring/summer blooms.
