Propagating Kalanchoe

Propagating Kalanchoe
I would love to propagate my kalanchoe plant. What is the best way to do so and how often should I water the repotted clipping?

propagate kalanchoe in soil or root in water

To propagate your kalanchoe, take 4-6 inch cuttings, remove the lower leaves so you end up with a stem 2-3″ long. Place the cutting on a counter for 1-2 days so that it can form a callus. Plant in a 3 inch pot filled with a cactus type soil (free- draining) and water. Insert the cutting, so the leaves are just above the soil surface. Rooting should take 2-3 weeks.  Once rooted plant in 3-4 inch pots and water in well. Kalanchoe should be kept on the dry side, to avoid root rot. Water when to top 2″ of soil are dry.  You can also root them in water.

    Hi Winter
It’s better to root the cutting in soil. Cuttings rooted in water will have a more difficult time to transitioning to soil. If rooting in water, let the cutting dry for a couple of days to form a callus and then place in water. It should root in 1-3 weeks.

You can divide Kalanchoe if you have two main stems in the soil to separate. A better way is to take cuttings from the stems, root them in water and replant them as new plants. I divided my plant with cuttings and now have 4 plants from one main plant. They are now blooming.

I have a kalanchoe poincairel. Do you have any information about this plant?

I have no info on this plant. Perhaps it has a different name? Sometimes plants have more than one name.

    HI Leigh
It sounds like a watering issue, that is causing root problems. Perhaps you are overwatering the plant? When watering, err on keeping the plant on the dry side.

Hi , i’ve got a few kalanchoes that id like to propagate . Would it be ok if i did it when the plant is flowering or is it pointless to try? Please help!

    HI Victor
You can try to take cuttings from the blooming plant. Make sure you remove the flowers.

    Hi Jewel
You can cut the plant back and it should send out new growth from the node. A better optiion is to take the cuttings and root them to make new plants

    Hi.
Mine is more of a comment. I have 2 of these plants. One my 10 yr old bought when it was very tiny.
It was rather droopy and had some leaves that were ready to be removed(or so I thougt)
I pruned the plant and as I have a bad habit of doing, I left the leaves in the bottom of the pot. My thinking in this was to provide the plant with a little extra natural nutrients and layer for holding in moisture a little longer. I’ve had some great success with this practice in my outside garden. Anyways, after a while I realized that the leaf/stem cuttings were not dying or drying up. In fact they looked better. I picked one up and it had little roots all along the stem.
So In my experience, they are very easy to progagate. Just cut a leaf or leaf with stem and set on top of the potting soil in the mother plants pot. It hasn’t filled out yet, but they are growing. Very hardy plant indeed.
It’s amazing what you find out by accident 🙂

Thanks for the comment! Kalanchoe are easy to propagate.

I have a kalanchoe blossinfeldiana, but the stems seem to dry up and start to grow roots. Is this normal for the plant

    Hi
Your kalanchoe is ready to be propagated. You can cut off the stems with roots and plant them to get new plants.

Can I take cuttings from a plant that has buds? It is getting ready go bloom but looks terrible because all the bottom leaves have fallen off. The bare stems are getting air roots at the nodes.
