Florist Azalea care
Azalea is one of the longer lasting indoor blooming plants you can buy. Most Azaleas purchased from florists and supermarkets are greenhouse grown and are hardy in zones 7-10. When choosing an Azalea, pick one with tight buds and healthy leaves which will extend your blooming time.
Water
Azaleas are grown in well-drained acidic peat soil ph (5.5-6.0) for good water retention. Watering is one of the most important factors for extending the life of your Azalea. If the peat based soil is allowed to dry out it is difficult to rehydrate and therefore should be kept evenly moist. Check for watering daily. When the pot feels light or top layer is dry, water your plant.
Watering
Remove the decorative cover before watering to allow for drainage. Don’t let the roots sit in water, this can lead to root rot. Sometimes we forget to water and if the plant wilts, it can be rehydrated by placing it in a dish and soaking it for a few hours. It will perk up but will have signs of damage such as wrinkled, dry flowers, brown leaf tips and eventual leaf drop.
When watering use distilled or rain water. Avoid using hard water as it can change the soil ph.
Deadhead any wilted flowers and prune after the plant is finished blooming to promote new growth.
Care
Keep your Azalea in a cool, indirect sunny area away from drafts or heating vents in room temperatures 60-70°F/16-21°C. Fertilize with 1/4 strength acid fertilizer (Miracle Grow, Muracid)
After bloom care
When your azalea is done blooming , it can be set outdoors. Plant it in partial shade (North or East exposure) after danger of frost has passed. Either sink the pot in the ground or plant it directly in well drained acid soil. Fertilize during the growing season with an acid fertilizer.
Before frost returns, dig up the plant and bring it indoors for the winter. Repot in fresh peat moss/potting soil. With a little luck, it should rebloom around Christmas.
I have a twisted white potted azalea and planted it outside in washington state. It is currently march and i wasnt sure if i had planted it out too early but the flowers are droopy. Will it die? Or will it overcome the environment and thrive?
I have just received a florist azalea. I live in alabama. can I plant it outside?
My azaleas indoor plant stem started drying after blooming…What should I do??
Hello,
I’m thinking about buying an azalea topiary for my mother, but she wants to plant it outside. Is it okay for me to take the topiary out of the pot it’s in, and re-plant it outdoors? Please help! I’m trying to do this for her on mother’s day!
Hey I got my azalea bonsai 2 weeks ago and I have been keeping it inside and the flowers have turned white instead of pink and a have brown parts on the top am I water it twice a week and keep it in the sun for a few hours a day so is it normal for the flowers to go white or am I doing something wrong?
Hey
The pink flowers can turn white as they age, also less sun (if it was grown outside) will fade the color. Any stress on the plant will show up on the flowers. Avoid spraying the flowers. Bonsai are tricky when it comes to watering. Soak the plant and then wait until the surface is dry to re water. You don’t want the plant to dry out completely. If the plant is outdoors, it may require being watered more often.
Hi I own a potted azalea plant and have managed to keep it alive for the past year. However, it appears I over watered it last week (thinking my partner hadn’t while I was away) and now about 80% of the leaves have fallen off and the remaining ones are incredibly droop. The soil is damp. Is the anyway to dry it out? Or have I killed it???????
I have just bought 8 mini azaleas. It’s been around two week since I planted them and they were full of blooms and flowers. Now they all look like they are dead. I use top soil when I planted them and kept the root ball about 1″ above the ground. Please help
I have an Azalea Bonsai that dropped all its leaves right after it finished blooming. The stems turned brown and they look woody. I pruned it back in February. I have been watering it even though it looks dead. Although everything on it brown right now, the stems are not brittle and they do not break off when I try to bend them. They are still flexible. This is why I have been taking care of it hoping it will come back in the spring. Do you think this is possible, or am I wasting my time? This bonsai was a gift and I really don’t want to lose it.
After reading the above comments and questions I have come to realize I have been over watering my Azalea. I drained all excess water and pruned the truly dead twigs and leaves. It’s been dead headed and I am left with a partially healthy looking plant, some droopy yet beautifully green leaves that I left because although they look as if they are dying they are riddled with new growth. It should be about 107 degrees here today so I don’t want to put it outside, however I try to keep it about 70 degrees in the house. I am wondering what to do with my plant. Will it dry out on it’s own here in the house or should I do something in addition to what’s already been done? Also, I’m not sure that it has been potted in the correct soil as my father is the one that transplanted it to a larger pot for me. Once I find out is it ok to change the soil now or do I need to wait?
Thanks so much,
Fawn
I got a braided azalea for mother’s day, and I was wondering if I could continue to braid the azalea, and exactly how do I do it. This is my first plant so I’m a beginner. I just recently found out what ‘pinching’ was! Lol! My azalea still has flowers. Hope someone can help. Thanks!
I have had a braided azalea for 3 years and have managed to keep it healthy and blooming. I’ve repotted it twice since I received it and have trimmed it every year after it’s bloomed and have not had any problems. This year I trimmed it after blooming and within a week, it started losing leaves that were dry and brittle. I hadn’t changed the watering schedule or fertilizing schedule from previously but the soil appeared excessively moist as though the plant wasn’t absorbing anything. I removed it from the pot, cleaned the roots, repotted with fresh soil, trimmed back all the branches that appeared dry and brittle hoping it will revive. Is there anything else I can do to help it along and how long should it take before I can expect some regrowth.
My boyfriend just bought me the most beautiful azalea bonsai and as it has fully bloomed with bright pink gorgeous flowers the leaves are just falling off… i water it when necessary and check constantly for moisture in the soil.

compared to that pic its a whole lot more pink flowers id say 95% and alot less leaves… is this normal?
Leaf drop
I just bought a lovely fully blooming azalea tree and placed it in indirect light in my kitchen. Tag said to keep moist, and it wasn’t kidding. After only the second day home it let me know it needed water by the wilting of it’s flowers. Watered, and by afternoon the flowers were full again. Next 1-2 day, wilty flowers, then watered, then full again. Started watering daily to prevent the wilties, and it looks happy, but if it gets a little shake, tons of dried leaves fall. Removed all the dried leaves, but after a few days more dried leaves are falling. Still have tons of flowers, but green foliage is beginning to be sparse compared to when I brought it home. Worried I’m still doing something wrong. Any ideas?
I have a very sick azalea. It is an indoor potted plant in my kitchen. The leaves are falling off quickly after turning almost spotted white and wilting around the edges but seeming dry and droopy but not hard. It has been happening a while and I’m not sure what to do. Is it a bug or fungus? I have repotted recently (problem started before I did) and now some of the new topsoil has white on top as well (don’t know if it is related or not).
Can I keep an azalia outdoors in freezing weather in a frost-proof container?
I recently put out some fertilome winterizer on my encores. About half of them look like they are dead or dying. Can i use the scratch the branch technique to see if they will are still alive? Some plants have black leaves now and others have brown. All plants are droppin leaves rapidly. More than normal. If they make it will they put out new leaves is spring? What should i do?
Our azaleas have turned brown and lost leaves. We just went through a very dry period and, despite my best efforts, I’m positive they suffer from dehydration. They were planted in April–the azaleas in our backyard that have been there for years and years seem unaffected by the drought. Anyway, it has started raining more frequently and all of the other plants seem to be perking up, but the azaleas are the ones I’m most worried about since they’re already in such bad shape. What can I do to help them at this point? Will cutting them back some help at all? Should I just wait with my fingers crossed?
I have a azaela tree that was given to me for my birthday. How do I care for it. It is in a pot but really don’t have a place to put it into the ground. Can I leave it in the pot, but do I put it outside in a sheltered area on the deck?? It has entwined trunks that make a stem. Help !!
Repeat bloom
i bought an azalea full of flowers, i changed to a bigger pot. the flowers stayed for a while and then fell off.
the azalea never had more buds. the leaves are healthy and beautiful but no flowers come up.
i use the fertilizer but didn’t work! i live in toronto, canada
hello. i just bought a pink azalea and i wonder where can i keep it. indoor or outdoor. i live in Mauritius a tropical island. it is very hot outside 28 degrees.
Hello,
My boyfriend sent me a small potted azalea for my birthday at the beginning of June. I put it on my front porch and forgot to water it a few times since I mainly use my backdoor. Since I realized, I’ve been watering it every day by pouring about a cup of water from my britta filter over top of it when I wake up in the morning, but it has not seemed to improve at all. When I got it, it was all green. Now some of the leaves and branches are about half brown. Its never had any flowers. My front porch gets sunlight for about 3 hours a day, my back porch gets sunlight for almost the entire day. Where should I put it? Since reading, it looks like I may need to water it less? Do I water it from above or pour the water right on the soil? I figured above was more like rain. Does it matter what time of day I water it? Should I not be using filtered water? The LA water just seems so dirty to me. Oh, also, I live in los Angeles. Please help me, my boyfriend will be so sad if it dies 🙁 I’ve never had a plant before and had no idea it would be this complicated!
I planted 2 azalea bushes about 3 years ago in my flower bed. They bloom every year but have not grown at all. They are still the same size as when we planted them. Are there mini ones?
I had a braided azalea i got april 1st last year, it dropped all it’s flowers and leaves at the end of may. My husband moved it to my storage room in the basement and it was forgotten about from about oct-april…When i finally realized what happened i took it outside and watered it and placed it in partial sun. is it too late for me to try and save it? it doesn’t appear to have any leaf growth at all.
Browning flowers
my azalea flowers are all turning brown and are dying but there are new stems all over with bright green leaves… the plant looks like its healthy other than the brown dying flowers 🙁
Cold temp exposure
Yesterday, when I bought azaleas for my mother for Mother’s Day, it was warm and sunny outside!!! They are in their pots sitting on my front porch. Now a cold front has moved in and it is 46 degrees outside. I wanted to know if I need to move them inside? My friend said that the temp is going to drop to 40 degrees tonight. Will the cold hurt the azaleas???
Watering
brought azalea two weeks ago left paper on water every day small medicine cup leaves falling off still green flowers wilted when i shock plant over waste basket
all the leaves fell off on side
i put out my 2 potted girard azaleas outside 2 weeks ago and noticed browning of leaves so broght in. Found a 2 ” worm in soil.and signs of mites.
brown spots on leaves. Sprayed pyrethins for worms and bayer mite spray on leaves for mites. Would miraacid help plant right now. or do i sit
and watch plant struggle. These aren’t grubs. skinny pink worm.(they eat roots correct) I ould throw out the worminfected plant out.but it is the greenest. These plants bloomed twice inside.beautiful coral flowers.i hate to give up on them.my garden is in the front.these two live out on patio

I could assume that the other plant has worms too. it has all brown and green leaves.didn’t see a worm
the green plant had thw worm in its soil/
I received a Azalea plant from a family funeral. There is no tag on it, How do I know if I can plant it outside or if it is an inside azalea. If can be planted outside do they need part sun & shade?
we hade 3 bad snow storm my azalea the branch are fall off and the leaves are dried out what can i do save them
I planted 30 azaleas this spring. We went through a period of 60-60 days with no rain in August and September. October has not been all that great either. All the leaves dried up and fell off. Are they gone or should I prune them back and hope for the best in the spring?
I have several older azaleas that are not doing well in the ground. I would like to take a few of them and put them into pots to create more of a bonsai plant. I suspect I will have to cut the roots fairly significantly in order to do this. How much cutting can the roots take without damaging the plant? What would be the best time of year to do this? Any other advice?
Powdery mildew
I have 5 white azaleas that bloomed well this past spring but since then their leaves have become “white/gray specked”. The leaves are very green but this “speckling” makes them look gray. What can I do? I have been watering them since we’ve had such oppressive heat and I fertilized them last Feb.
I have an indoor azalea. The flowers are dried out since more than a month but it did not fall down and feels little stick. Should I take them off?
Please advice!
Thank you..
I have bought 6 mini azalea’s. We are wanting to plant them but are unsure of how far apart they should be. Can you please help me?
I just broke an azalea when removing it from the grower’s pot. Will the root send up sucker-type shoots if I plant it anyway? Or is there a way to salvage the upper part where all the blooms are? It’s a Herbert Azalea and I’m in Northern IL.
Hi, I bought a florist azalea and it did not come with care instuctions. I live in southeast Louisiana which is very hot and humid. I would like to know if I should leave it in a pot or plant it in the ground in a shaded area. Is it safe to leave outdoors in the winter? It was in full bloom when I bought it but, it was in a very small pot. I have repotted it in a larger pot with Miracle Grow potting soil and water it every couple of days. I keep it on my front porch (which is the east side) so it gets the morning sun and then it is in shade for the rest of the day. Should I be doing anything different and how large do they grow? I would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks so much.:)
I planted 2 azalea bushes last spring that grew over the summer and were doing well. I noticed this winter though they have turned very brown. Almost all the leaves on the bushes are brown. I’m hoping as it starts warming up they will come back. I was wondering if they have died though? I live in zone 6, and we did have a very cold winter. I did put mulch around them though when they were planted. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on this. Do you think they will come back this spring?
I have the same problem. I wonder if my plant is already dead. Did your’s spring back to life?
Cold damage
My husband bought me an azalea plant for valentine’s day. We live in GA and it snowed two days ago, so it’s been pretty cold. He left the plant in his car overnight (I guess to make sure I didn’t see it) but as a result the plant wilted. I have watered it and placed it by a window with indirect sunlight, but I want to know what else I can do…or is it a lost cause…
I have a potted Azalea I brought at the nursery a year ago. It was doing so well until it started to drop everything and now is reduced to branches. Before it became this way, I’d brought it to my local nursery for suggestion to save my plant. I was told to repot it and give it some Azalea food and it would be okay.
I snapped off a few tips of the branches and it’s bone dried, but closer to the main truck, the branches I snapped at still green. Do I have hope? What should I do?
If I lose this Azalea, I wish to replace it, but I don’t know what type it is. The flowers were a deep pink with a slight color of violet depending how the light hits it.

I bought 2 Fashion Azaleas at the beginning of spring. My grandmother that lives 8 houses down has these exact bushes and I love hers. I planted them just as she and the person at the store said. They looked great till about a week ago. They were very vibrant with lots of buds and bright pink flowers. The buds bloomed. After they all bloomed, none of the flowers fell off. They kinda turned brown on some and others just wilted and sticking to each other. The stems and leaves are still very green and I do see new stems with leaves growing. Just no more buds. I picked all the flowers off that were rather dead or wilted and gooey just incase the plant was getting sick. Am I possible watering to much? Not enough? Is this a sign of them dying? Or just a sign of the blooms being done. I live In Southern Indiana. I do not have a green thumb. Please help me!! Will I see pretty pink flowers again?!!
I have a small azalea bush I’ve had for several years, and every year it has always had tons of fuscia buds. I moved 2 years ago and it was fine with the transplant, but this year it did not bloom at all except for one little branch. The leaves are very lush and beautiful, and on all the other branches it looks like they had buds, but are empty and dry. It is planted right next to my house in my flower garden, and was fine for the last couple of years since the transplant…what could be wrong with it? We did kind of have a harsher and colder winter this time, but I would have thought it would have been fine since it always had been outside!
I want to root two azalea branches that broke off, they are very sturdy. Do I just put them in a glass of water? Thanks
I want to plant new hydrangeas (about 5 or 6 of them) along one side of my home. I want them to appear as a continuous hedge.
How far apart should they be planted?
I am, also, planting azaleas along a fence but I need to know
how far from the fence they should be planted.
What kind of hydrangeas and azaleas. They grow in different “sizes”. The garden center should be able to provide you with that info.
I just bought several azaleas from Home Depot. (They have only been in the ground for about a week or so)I used the acid fertilizer that an employee recomended for azaleas. The mixture said to water for about 10-12 minutes and now the flowers are all wilted and my white flowers turned brown. (The leaves are still green and seem to be fine)
Are the plants dead or just the blooms gone? (I have not watered them in about 4 days scared it will hurt them more)
They are also in full Texas sun in my backyard. What can I do to save the plants?
Hello! I just bought several encore azaleas (autumn embers) and ended up planting them on the north side of my house, along the foundation. After planting, I noticed this area, while pretty exposed, gets very little sun during the day due to the shadow cast by our house. So far, they look fine. I live in wilmington, nc (zone 7-8). It gets awfully hot and humid in the dead of summer here, and my husband insists on leaving them put and seeing how they do. What do you think?
I bought 2 azaleas of the same variety last fall. I planted them about 3 ft. apart. One is doing quite well with bright green, healthy looking leaves. The other has a few dead branches which I’ve pruned, but it also looks a bit “sickly”, with darker colored leaves that are drooping a bit.
Any suggestions? I’ve cared for each plant in exactly the same way since planting and they’re in the same area, so the soil must be the same
Thanks very much.
Please help. I planted 6 azalea plants last year. Toward the end of the summer, I noticed that the leaves on all the plants were turning dull and spotted. Now 3 of the plants have completely turned brown and they are very brittle. The branches just break off when you touch them. Why? What can I do?
I received a small light pink azalea plant for Valentine’s Day. It’s trunks/branches are braided and the leaves and blooms are in a round shape at the top. Is there any special care that I should give? I’ve read alot of the above posts and have the following questions: Before watering do I need to wait till the top of soil is dry? Do I water from the top or bottom? I water it daily from the top in my sink where it can drain well. When do I fertilize?
We just had a sewer line replaced and two established azalea plants had to be dug up. The plumbers replanted them in their same spots but because of our zone (6), I’m afraid they won’t do well during the rest of our winter. Should I dig them up and bring them inside till spring (6 weeks) or leave them out? What are your suggestions?
I received a beautiful florist azalea in April ’08 in full bloom. I kept it outdoors in a sheltered spot all summer. Put it on a more protected porch in early fall, and in Sept. it set new buds. Brought it in before frost and it burst into full bloom. Then when blooms died it dropped almost all leaves. What should I do to revive it, and keep it as a house plant?
I have an indoor azalea plant which I have had for about 4 years. I am very pleased with the blooming it continues to do. However, every once in a while it drops blooms that are still fresh (I put them in a dish of water and they stay beautiful for a week or 2). I haven’t figured out why this happens. Can you tell me?
I live in Toronto, Canada and would like to know what to do with my potted azalea over the winter. The flowers are all gone and the leaves are wilting but I see some new growth near the base of the plant.
I recently moved and have aquired what I believe to be a miniature azalea? It has purple blooms, only one bloom per bud, and no clusters. It just started blooming and bush size is about 3’x3′. Do I need to cut this back going into winter? Not sure if it was cut back before. The overall plant size has not really changed since May. It is on the north side of my house and looks to have been there for quite a while. Just looking for some information; don’t know anything about azaleas. Thanks! 🙂
HELP! I am not a plant person. I have several Azalea plants that have blossomed the three years I have lived at my home. Suddenly, this fall, I noticed that some of the plants had dead branches. I went in to prune and now they are very thin. A couple of them are dead all the way to the stem. But only partly dead. There is some growth on the other side of the stem. Can I pull half the plant away and plant another beside it or would you replant totally? Plus, the others are thin, should I just start over with all of them. I do not know why they have suddenly died. I was thinking maybe the green ivy type ground cover took all the water and the Azaleas paid the price. I did not mulch this year either.
I planted several azalea bushes to the north side of my house. alot of the leaves are turning yellow to red and dropping off. I have done everything I know to do. Is this normal at this time of year?
I live in Cleveland, Ohio and just rec’d an azalea bush from a florist as a get well plant. It is the end of August. I would like it to be an outdoor plant. Can I plant it now or when? Do I have to bring it in in the winter?
I bought a house with a bank of azaleas planted on the south face of the house. They are probably over 10 years old. They are in full sun all day, causing them to bloom and then wilt in about 6-7 days in the spring. I want to transplant them to a shadier area in my yard, but had a couple of questions. How severely should they be pruned before transplanting them this fall? How big of a root ball should I aim for (these are planted near where my neighbors phone lines run)?
Thanks!
HI Jenna
Here’s a source of good detailed information on Azalea transplanting & pruning. http://www.azaleas.org/index.pl/faq.html#pla
I was given a potted azalea plant. This is my first house plant. After about a month the plants blooms turned brown and dried out. The leaves became dry as well and fell off. What have I done and what needs to be done to help my plant?
what if it is winter time, can you still replant it?
I have an Azalia that bloomed through all 3 seasons last year. This year it rained so heavy in the spring all the blossom became damaged and never recovered. I removed the dead blossom thinking it would bloom again but it hasnt. I have fertilized it, is there anything else I can do to encourage it to bloom again?
I have an azalea bush it seems healthy it is green and lush but did not bloom or have any flower buds? It has bloomed other years. Is there something wrong with it?
Did you prune or fertilize it?
Exactly what part of the azalea bloom is to be removed once they have faded? I just moved to a property with beautiful azalea bushes that were loaded with blooms this spring. Most of the blooms have already fallen off, but I am wondering id I need to remove just the flower or the “flower stalks”, much like a rhododendron?
I fertilized my azaleas with a fertilizer designed for azaleas. Now, the tips of the leaves are brown and the flower buds aren’t blooming, they are just dry and brown. Did I over fertilize? Will they recover? What else can I do for them?
I have an 4 azalea bushes in my yard. One of these bushes has started dropping leaves from the center of the plant and looks like it is dying. This is a large plant by my home entry and i don’t want to lose it. Any suggestions?

Miniature azalea bush. Could you please tell me how tall and wide they grow? thank you.
Very informative- I never had an azalea plant before this gift of one. Thank you
I recently bought an Azalea plant and noticed a little too late that the water was not draining from the pot it came in. Nothing has dropped off yet, but the flowers have become limp and wilted. About a day after I noticed this I re-potted it in a larger pot that has drainage holes. Will this help bring it back or is it too late? What else can I do to heal it?
we have a beautiful white azalea plant that came with the house (so it is at least 20 years) and it is important to me as it blooms exactly on our anniversary every year…and until the past couple of years has really given a beautiful showing of blooms. I have pruned dead branches back here and there but this year there is major dead branches (60-70%)…meanwhile there is growth, new leaves and buds in other areas(30-40%). my husband wants to get rid of it but I have an attachment to it and want to try and save it. can the major part of the plant be cut back to the base of the plant and then can I expect re-growth next year??? the plant is also rather miss-shaped now from the branches from the past few years I have pruned out. would cutting it back to the base give me a new start at a better shape? any help would be appreciated. thank you.
I received a florist Azalea for my birthday a week ago. The pot it is in is very small but I am afraid to repot it. I live in Indiana and don’t believe I can plant it outdoors. Do you think I can leave it in the pot it is in until spring?
I have a huge bush of Azalea out side. I collected quite an amount of seeds. Can I start with the seed for new plant or can I cut branches from the bush and grow inside during the winter and plant in the spring. i would like to propagate the plant and use it as border on front of the house. Thank you for attention. Prabhakar.
My husband just picked up some fisher pink azaleas a couple of days ago. Is it to late to plant them in the ground. We live in south texas. Thanks

All of my white azaleas have brown on the edges of the flowers, also the buds. Is it because they get wet from the sprinklers?
My Azalea’s are about 10yrs. old. I need to transplant them, because we had to cut some trees, and now they will be in full sun all day. When and how is the best time to transplant them.

My azaleas have been severely cut back and now have spindly shoots coming out instead of a bush effect. How can I fix this problem or are they too damaged?
I have many Azaleas planted in my garden but find that the leaves are going white although I have added iron and also acid to the soil. The back of the leaf has lots of tiny dark spots and I am wondering if these plants have a chewing insect on them and they need to be sprayed with something. Can you tell me what and many thanks.
