Potted Calla lily care
I received a potted Calla lily as a gift and don’t know anything about it. I would like some information on how to care for it.
Potted Calla lilies will usually bloom for 4-6 weeks. They grow well in bright filtered light in the winter months and partial shade in the summer and prefer temperatures of 70-85F in summer and 60-75F in the winter/spring. Cooler temperatures will help keep the plant and flowers longer.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Wet soil can lead to a fungus rot that affects the roots and rhizome. It is important to allow the water to drain from the bottom of the pot. During active growth and blooming feed your Calla every 2-3 weeks with a well-balanced fertilizer.
After bloom care
When the plant stops blooming and the leaves start to yellow and die back, reduce watering and let the soil dry. Clip off all brown foliage and store the tubers in a cool (45-50F) dry area for a resting period of 2-3 months and as long as 8-10 months. This period is important for tuber renewal.
Calla tubers/bulbs can also be stored in paper bag or cardboard box in slightly moistened peat, perlite or vermiculite. In late winter/spring, replant the tuber in pots of fresh, well-drained soil mix. Colored callas planted in the spring will bloom in summer and then go dormant in the fall.
Hardiness
If you live in zone 7-10, Calla lily can also be planted anytime outdoors and left year round. Space the tubers 1-1 1/2 feet appart so they have room to spread.
In zone 7-8, provide additional mulch in the winter for added protection.
In cooler climates, calla lilies should be dug up before the first frost or after the foliage withers.

Some of the smaller stalks of my calla lily are turning brown and dying – today I saw that the tip of the one flower is starting to turn brown too! My flowers have turned green already, and I’ve tried giving it more sun and less water, with no results. Should I actually be watering it more? It’s not droopy at all yet…
I received a purple calla lily last October. I read up on the care and did as instructed. I let it die back, let it go dormant, and towards the end of winter, I reported in a larger pot, brand new soil, and have been fertilizing every two weeks with a 15-30-15 bloom booster fertilizer from Miracle Gro. Greenery finally broke through the soil just over a month ago. I have a few leaves right now (standing at about 2.5 feet tall), but have noticed that one of the leaves (not the stem, just the leave itself) is looking a little droopy. Is there a reason for this, or is this normal? I’ve never noticed the leaf to be as droopy before I replanted.
My calla lily leaves are dripping liquid why?
I am completely new to growing plants so forgive me if I sound dumb. But I recently bought a Calla Lily that you start from a bulb. The main shoot came up but in the past week I’ve been seeing white shoots. I don’t know if they are roots since its a container plant or actually flower shoots. Like I said I’m a complete noob when it comes to this stuff. Can anyone please help me?
I live in Las Vegas, very hot summer, I received a beautiful purple calla lily. Can I plant it outside, if not how do I keep it. Do I need to repot it, it is a large plant.
Hi, last spring I bought 3 calla lilys and they were beautiful and fine. This spring a new plant has started growing there instead. It’s got big green leafs and keeps getting taller and taller it’s up to over a foot now. I was going to pull it asumming it was a weed when my neighbor said not to that it was a calla lily regrowing. I think she was wrong. It’s keep getting taller no budding on it and the leafs don’t look like the leafs that the calla lily had. Any ideas on what this is or should I just pull it?
This happened to me. The original had big spotted leaves. The new ones have narrower solid green leaves. Ironically, the newer ones bloomed beautifully and for a long time this summer, while the original did not re-bloom. Also, the calla lilies have spread to other spots in the garden and all are blooming. Good luck. Enjoy them.
Hi,
I have a strange problem. I had white, purple and yellow mini calla’s for several years. The white and purple calla’s had the long, slender green leaves and the yellow calla had the fatter green leaves with white speckles. The yellow calla morphed and this year it grew with the long slender green leaves and now has white blooms. I’m confused…
The other problem is the foliage is SO tall (tips of greens are almost 4′) the greens are folding over. They are not creased and they do not die. Why would they ‘fold’?
I live in Michigan and winter the pots in my garage. At the first sign of growth, I put them in fresh soil and bring them up for sunshine.
Help…

I don’t know the answer, but I rec’d a yellow potted calla lilly for mothers day 2017. Outside a.m. sun (St.Louis MO) water thoroughly every other day usually. Have not fertilized. I swear the yellow flowers have turned green and won’t open! Flowers have been green for the month of June approximately.
Drooping flowers
This past spring, we planted several Golden Nugget Calla Lily, where they get only direct sun light in the morning. The leaves are standing up and have a nice green color. But the flower are not standing up. We water the plant in the morning only. What can we do to get the bloons to stand up.
I need help! A friend gave me some potted plants to watch for them while they were on vacation, 2 calla lilies and 2 dipladenia’s (with accent plants), they mentioned that the blooms on the lilies were drooping and didn’t know what was wrong… I’m usually pretty good with plants but these have me stumped, nearly all the leaves stand strong and tall and a nice green, (except for a few leaves closest to the edge of the pot) but just about all the lily blooms are droopy some with edges dried out…how should I proceed? I’ve tried watering them daily, no change, I’ve tried only watering them every other day…. no change….I live in OK US so I usually set them out in the late evening sun, when it isn’t so hot, keep them in a room in the house that is at least 70 degrees, I’m lost, how can I make the blooms stand tall and pretty like they are supposed to? same thing is happening to the other 2 plants as well… they turn yellow then a brown and fall off so easily …. I water those every other day as so not to keep it drowned.. I try to water only to moisten… ANY help is appreciated and thank you so very much in advance… ~ desperate for beautiful blooms
I think….my Calla has root rot, toooo much water from a storm. Can she be rescued?????
I just bought a beautiful yellow calla lily three days ago, no instructions came with it. One of the green leaves is turning brown as well as one of the blooms. I have it in full sun and I am watering every day. Should I move it to a shady place and water less? Also, should I go ahead and cut the brown leaf and bloom off? Thanks!!!
I have a calla Lilly that has bloomed and now the blooms are closing and bending over. Is it best to remove the older blooms to allow for new ones and is there a certain way they should be cut as to not damage the plant?
I bought a pot of dark purple calla lilies from Trader Joe’s in early January. Recently I noticed that some of the leaves are turning yellow and the flowers are drying out and turning black. I only water them once a week so I don’t now if maybe they need more water or what’s going on with them please help me.
