Propagating Kalanchoe

Propagating Kalanchoe
I would love to propagate my kalanchoe plant. What is the best way to do so and how often should I water the repotted clipping?

To propagate your kalanchoe, take 4-6 inch cuttings, remove the lower leaves so you end up with a stem 2-3″ long. Place the cutting on a counter for 1-2 days so that it can form a callus. Plant in a 3 inch pot filled with a cactus type soil (free- draining) and water. Insert the cutting, so the leaves are just above the soil surface. Rooting should take 1-3 weeks.  Once rooted plant in 3-4 inch pots and water in well. Kalanchoe should be kept on the dry side, to avoid root rot. Water when to top 2″ of soil are dry.  You can also root them in water.

    Propagating Kalanchoe
I see above you mentioned the plant can be rooted in water. Do I need to let the cutting dry for a couple days first? What is the best way to go about rooting the plant in water?

    Hi Winter
It’s better to root the cutting in soil. Cuttings rooted in water will have a more difficult time to transitioning to soil. If rooting in water, let the cutting dry for a couple of days to form a callus and then place in water. It should root in 1-3 weeks.

which season or month is better for propagation? and which is better for changing the pot for my kalanchoes?

    Hi Pari
Early to mid spring is the best time to take cuttings and repot your Kalanchoe.

Can Kalanchoe be divided in two?

You can divide Kalanchoe if you have two main stems in the soil to separate. A better way is to take cuttings from the stems, root them in water and replant them as new plants. I divided my plant with cuttings and now have 4 plants from one main plant. They are now blooming.
