Brugmansia care
Brugmansia, Angel Trumpet is a large shrub or small tree with large, pendent trumpet shaped flowers. There are several varieties that range in color and growth habit but all are known for their exotic fragrance which intensifies in the evening. They are frost tender (zone 8 ) and prefer a warm to hot climate in protected sun.
Care
Plant in a light, fertile, well- drained soil. Brugmansia is a fast grower and heavy feeder and needs to be fertilized regularly ( 2x per week) during the growing season. Provide lots of water to keep it in bloom all summer and fall. Since it blooms on new wood, it can be trimmed when growth becomes excessive or when you want to shape it as a dense round shrub or tree . It will take a month or more to resume blooming after pruning.
Winterover brugmansia
In cold climates, it is best to grow it in a container and move it indoors/greenhouse to a frost-free area during the winter. Place it in a south window and maintain it as a houseplant during this time watering once a week. You may get some leaf drop which is normal. The second option is to cut your brugmansia back and store it dormant in a cool (above 40F), dark place (basement, garage) watering monthly to keep the soil from totally drying out. The plant will defoliate completely during dormancy.
Prune in the spring after the last frost, when new growth appears and the plant is ready to go outside. Cut back to one or two buds.
No flowers can be the result of low light, low fertilizer or excessive heat.
All parts of this plant are poisonous and not advisable to grow if you have small children or animals that eat plants.
Datura (Jimson weed) has similar flowers that point upright but are completely different plants.
Amazing,
I’m up in the middle of the night and concerned about the trumpets I just got. I was walking the dog the other morning and noticed some on the side of the neighbors yard and I left a kind note requesting a cutting and to my surprise she said I could have them. There is one about 4 feet tall with 3 stalks on it and the other is about 3 feet tall with 2 stalks on it. They had them in a really bad dry area but the leaves looked amazing and the stalks are strong and they had bloomed recently because I saw where it had recently fallen off. I was careful in digging them up but they have obviously gone into a hard shock. I’m so concerned about them. I had this plant years ago from a little old lady in my neighborhood and they lived for some 3 years but then I moved and I didn’t transplant them and they died in the severe drought. These plants are very dear to me and I want to save them. I read some of the posts, what should I do? Cut off all of the leaves? Please… any help would be appreciated because I want to know that I have done all I can.
Joan; I have my plant outside under a spruce tree.
When the leaves fall off they will regrow, keep watering and fertilize for blooming. Now that it is summer I do the feritizing 2 x’s a week. I have cut my plant back each year, it gets so big and I need to bring it in the house each fall.
I have given away cutting and the ladies are so pleased to have them. I live in Ontario north of Toronto. Maggie
Due to the high heat my angel trumpet dropped all it’s leaves will it make a come back i have been keeping it watered and fertilized trying my best to support any advice will be helpfull
I have a bed (Michigan) where lots of datura have grown as annuals and reseeded for several years. Because of our dog getting into them and ingesting seeds (we think) last year, we want to plant tomatoes and beans in that bed this year. Is it safe to do so, considering the poisonous nature of the plants?
HI Robin
I don’t think it will affect your tomato plants or beans
I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and am growing Brugmansia suaveolens from seed. I have 5 healthy seedlings at present and want to insure their continued health. My understanding is that B. suaveolens is one of the best varieties for a tropical climate. Is this correct? How much sun should they receive? Our climate in winter is usually highs in the 70’s to 80’s and lows in the 60’s to 70’s. However, days can be considerably hotter in the summer here. We almost always have high humidity. Thanks for any growing advice you can provide.
Hi Mike. Can you get me some fresh suaveolens seeds? For advice, position the plants so they avoid the extremely hot part of the day out of the direct sun. They despite having adequate moisture will wilt considerably. Keep em fed and watered(with good drainage) and STAND BACK.
I’d like to know how greenhouses force Brugmansias to bloom. I bought mine around Mother’s Day – it was blooming heavily and only 2′ tall (it had been cut back to 6 inches.) It grew strongly, both up and out all summer, flowering in waves every 1-1/2 months or so. The next two years it grew 6′, with no laterals, not blooming until October just prior to our first frost. I read that Bru’s are autumn bloomers in their natural habitat.
I also find the conflicting info re: fertilizing confusing – twice a week vs once or twice a month. Lots of nitrogen vs low nitrogen and lots of phosphorus. Thanks.
Root pruning/topdressing
Hello!
I am wintering over mine for the second year. Last year, I kept it alive in the basement with no pruning and it stayed green. This year we had about five blooms all summer (last year, many blooms). It’s in the same spot (as last year) and it was watered well, although I could have fertilized it more. Was it because I didn’t prune it at all? A local place said that it was most likely because it was in the same pot with the same soil. They said the roots need to grow. They suggested I pot it up (it was already in large pot) or take the root ball out of the pot and cut it back and add new soil so the roots had new room to grow. I never did that and it did poorly. Have you heard of cutting the roots? I was just scared to do it. What is your thought on that?
Propagate from seed/cuttings
My wife cut off the limbs half way back so I have like three inch stubs and a tree.basically a stick figure pathetic to look at.Can you save our marriage I mean the beatiful trumpet tree we ‘ ve been talking about today.I did save seeds still in there ball form should I do something with them furthur crack them open now or wait ?
Seedpod on brugmansia
After pollination do the flowers fall off? How can you tell that the flowers are pollinated correctly?
Hi…we’ve been having a very warm fall here in my Zone 6 area. Last year at this time my brugs were cut back and put in the basement to overwinter. This year they are still blooming! When is the best time to cut back a plant for storing during the winter?
Thanks!
I have a yellow, white and a pink brugmansia. they are in 16″ pots and are between 4 and 6 feet tall and have bloomed very well, but all three are peach color. What causes this? I live near Chattanooga, Tn.
Winterover brugmansia
I live in zone 5B. Can I dig up my brugs, cut them back, and store them bare rooted in a cool basement overwinter?
My parent plants have developed massive roots and large trunks. I don’t think I will survive taking them to the basement to winter over. I started new plants to save for next year and plan on putting the parents in the garage with hopes of them surviving the cold. If they don’t @east I’ll have the new smaller plants. They are such fun to grow and share.
I have a spindley 9′ tall, blooming brug in the ground in Berkeley Ca. It has two blooming stalks (with “y” shapes), and one very straight, single stalk that comes out at about 1′, and is 8′ tall. Is this sucker growth? Should I just wait to see if it will divide? It adds a better balance to the shrub as a whole, but if it will never bloom should it be kept? I would have no trouble whacking it, but if there is potential that it might bloom I would prefer to keep it. Thanks for your time.
I forgot I live in Mo. Z-6, it has been a very hot humid summer…
I bought a pink Flamingo Burg from internet. It done well the first year and bloomed. I gave a cutting to a friend which did well and bloomed this year (2011) Mine started well then began dying in the spring. It wilted beginning at the leaves then back through the wood, I repotted it and it continued to do the same wilting. I tried putting it in the ground it started to grow from the root and then the new start wilted. I have 2 yellow burgs one in the ground and one potted the potted one has had a hard time but is now doing well. Are the pink harder to grow. I saw some black bugs in some potting soil.(gone now) I need some help here!! and what are the black bugs…
Brugmansia plant tip
I live in Michigan (zone 5) and have Many potted brugmansia. They are 7-8 ft tall. This is a thirsty plant, so I water it every day. Also use Miracle-Gro every other week. Since blooming began this year, each plant has @ least 30-40 flowers. They are unbelieveably beautiful! I winter them in the basement………..and don’t cut them back until spring, when I cut the stems into sections about 8 inches long. The cuttings I put in water in a window. The water gets changed every other day. When you’ve established substantial root systems, plant in potting soil and put in a sunny window. 2 weeks later they’re ready to move outside and enjoy1
Hello,
I live in oregon and have a two year old Brug in the ground that has wintered over very well when mulched. This year it has grown profusely, and is about 7-8 feet tall, but it only got three flowers and now has stopped. How do I get it to bloom more?
I was given a Brug cutting as a present a couple years ago. The plant seems to be growing strong, but I got only one large flower pod, and when it bloomed, it was deformed with stretches of brown on the flower, it lasted about a week and fell out. Do I prune the pod off at the “v” where it came from? Is the Brug sick if its got brown on the flower? The brug is has three arms on it and keeps trying to shoot a new trunk system from the root ball. Do I prune those off? I have been but they keep coming up. The brug is potted, and outside at the moment, I’m in zone 5 in Wisconsin. any thoughts would be helpful on how to keep it healthy.
thanks…
All summer this year I’ve had a terrible spider mite problem. Every day I’ve had to go out each morning and remove all the webs at the tops of the branches. As a result, the leaves are very small and spotted. The more spotted they are, the more easily they fall off the branches. Can you suggest something that will take care of these spider mites? I hate to lose the tree because last fall it bloomed very nicely for 6 weeks. It is the Brug (cherub). Thanks for your help.
Brug propagation tip
I have several brugmansia. Everyone wanted a plant, so I experimented. Early in the spring I cut sections about 6-8″ long and placed each in a jar of water. I placed the jars on an east facing window sill and changed the water every few days. In about a week the cuttings started developing roots. By planting time they were fully leafed and had a strong root system. I planted in pots of fresh potting soil and placed in the sun. I watered and fertalized on a regular basis. The cuttings are every bit as healthy and as large as the ‘mother’ plants. My friends are SO pleased. I will continue this practice…SO gratifying………..
That’s so cool. Thanks for the tip!
Not blooming
What a great site! I live in central Arkansas. We have very hot summers. I have 3 potted brugmasias, and 2 daturas. My daturas bloom very well, but the brugs don’t bloom. They get several hours of sun every day, I keep them watered and fed. Two of them are over 5 ft tall, and I’ve had the same experience w them for years now. I’m. Considering giving up, because they are certainly not attractive foliage plants! I winter them in my garage each yr, and they do quite well. Thanks for your help
Chicago: Recent weather high 80’s and above and humid, Water 2 x daily and feed once per week.
I have two questions on the Brugmaansia plant. I grow several colors but I am have a difficult time with the orange and Red
1) The Orange Brug, looks really healthy,(planted in container) leaves are big and I have several buds however, the buds are turning yellow and fall off before they have a chance to fill in the flower (inside the bud). Any ideas of what is happening? Sits on the southeast side of the yard. get sun until 4pm
2)It seems that the Red Brugs are hard to come by and tempermental. I have some on back order since April 2011. Any way, last year I was able to aquire a Red Brug, it grew over 5 feet (in a planter) but it did not have any buds. I watered it and misted it daily and fed it once a week, all of the sudden the plant started to wilt. I called the Botanical gardens to get some help, but all they told me was that it was poisionous. OK I’m aware of the plant dangers. then I finally got ahold of the seller, she could not help me out. I took it out of the container, the dirt smelled like rot, but the root was not rotted, I changed the dirt and the plant still struggled for 2 weeks before it just died. planted on the southeast side of yard, sunny location up to 4pm. Anyone have any idea as to what happened?

Compost poisonous plants
As to why you purchased seeds of brugmansia and expected pink blooms, the answer is very simple. Brugmansia do not throw true to parent. They are always different. The only way to get a true pink is to get a cloned cutting of the mother plant, it sounds as if you have done so. Brug seed, no matter if the pollen donateor is pink, as well as the pod mother, will mostly throw white flowered seedlings. If you end up with a pink, it is purely luck. SO don’t feel bad, although I think the seller should have explained this to you before duping you into seed purchase.
I brought a brugmansia, not really knowing what it was as it was just one small stump with a couple of leaves. So I just planted it in a very hot area with lots of sand. It sprouted more leaves just before winter (florida winter) and then died over the winter. This spring, more leaves came up and it grew quite big. All of a sudden big flowers came out. I just found out what it was by searching the web. It was doing quite well and I fertilized it once and the leaves started to turn pale, sort of whitish. Any suggestions?
Hi Again. Thanks for all the amazing and helpful tips I have found here. I have planted a 2 year old Brug in the ground in a 2 gallon pot so I can pull it up for winter. I also sunk the pot a few inches into the ground and then mulched the plant. It is doing really well and has taken off since being overwintered last year.
I have limited space in my yard…my question is whether or not I can plant edible plants, i.e. herbs or lettuces, near or around the base of the Brug ( about 6″ to a foot form the trunk). I know that Brugs are poisonous, roots and leaves, but if it doesn’t come into contact with the others, can I still harvest them for consumption?
Thanks!!!!
Hello, I have recently purchased a Burg plant and I live in Eastern Toronto. When I bought it, it had two beautiful flowers, but the second day it was in my yard one flower died. Two days later the other flower died. The leaves have holes and look like they’ve been eaten; some leaves have dried up at the ends, and one leaf is bright yellow.
I bought it last weekend and have fertilized it today for the first time. I also water it 1-2 times a day depending on the heat/sun.
How can I bring back the flowers?
Grdn
Do not pinch your Brug. It soon branch. When I brought my plant in doors after it bloomed in the fall, that is when I cut it back. From that cutting which was about 2-3 feet, I put it into pieces and then put it in a vase with water and when it had lots of roots then I planted it.
Hi…thank you for all of the great info on your site! I am confused about Brugs needing three branches to bloom. I have one Brug about three feet tall, but it only has one “branch” or stem with leaves coming off of it. How do I get the Brug to ‘branch’? Will it do this naturally or do I need to do some sort of pinching?
Thanks
Deanna, your plant needs 3 branches for it to bloom.
I would suggest if there is no buds on the other plant, split them now. My plant is in a 18 inch pot and over 5 feet tall.
There are two plants in one pot, which I need to split in the fall and one has three branches. Thanks for the advise I will wait. This will be the first year I put it outside, I hope it blooms.
Deanna, does your plant have 3 branches? I put my plant outside and I live in northern Ontario. My plant sits under an evergreen tree all summer where I water and feed it. I do strart new plants and give them away and the girls are so happy to see their plant flower. At present it is too cold up here to put the plant outside, so i will wait till the nights are warmer.
Maggie what do you mean by three branches. I did not have time to read all the messages in this string, but I read somewhere that the plants will not bloom until after the plant forms a Y. so how do we encourage that? I have seen Brugs that form the Y when quite short, and others are three feet or so. Should we prune them when they reach the height that we want them to form a Y?
Move plant outside
I live in Mass. and have had my plant for 2 years inside. It has never bloomed and is now 5 feet tall. I would like to put it outside this year but not sure when? Still only 40’s at night, is that too cold?
Tip die-back
hi i live in west texas, anyway one of brugmansia is drying out on the tip of the plant, what is causing it and what can i do, to stop it from dyeing, thats jessie
Does anyone know how to revive a Brugmansia? Mine seems to have died, probably because of a major white big problem I had. It was a rather large tree but now t’s just a bare stalk about 3 ft tall since i kept cutting it. The only thing that keeps me hoping it will come back to life is that it is still green underneath the bark when I scrape it. It was a gorgeous one with pink flowers. Is there anything i can do or should I just remove it and plant another one? Thanks!
where are you? is the plant outdoors?
Compost poisonous plants
I have quite a few white and one yellow brug, which I have had for years in zone 7a. I have them in 10 gallon pots and overwinter them in my greenhouse after triming back just above the Y. I have two questions…The white brugs came from seed I purchased on the Internet. They were supposed to be pink, but every single one turned out to be white and even after I reordered them…still got white. What happened? Finally just recently I have ordered a pink PLANT, since I want a pink brugmansia so bad. Hope that will go better. Could it be anything that I may be doing? My second question is this..since all parts of this plant are considered toxic, is it safe to add any dead leaves, trimmings, flowers, trimmed roots, or old plants to my compost? My compost usually ends up in my garden where I grow edibles, so is this safe to add?
Winterover brugmansiaYou didn’t respond to my prior questions, so I hope you can help me now. My beautiful Angels Trumpets have started blooming. Finally. But it’s the dead of winter – should I cut it back, or just enjoy the blooms as it continues to grow and is about to crowd me out of my kitchen where it sits in a big pot?
How often should I feed and water it? Go by the winter schedule or the blooming schedule?
Thanks for your help! Helen
Around the end of August I asked you for a recommendation for getting rid of white flies. I finally used Malathion. I only had to use it twice. Both times I sprayed the top and bottom of each leaf and then around the pot in a 6 foot circumference of the grass. The white flies went away by the next day and they have never returned. The lady who recommended the malathion and told me about spraying the grass around it said that it was “GOOD!!!” (her emphasis). I concur wholeheartedly. The brugmansia has stayed beautiful and grown. I fed it twice a week and kept the potted soil damp to wet.
Recently I re-potted the plant in a much larger container and moved it around to the south side of my house on my patio, right next to my house. I live in SE Texas (Houston area) and the weather has been near freezing twice already this year. I covered it both times. The plant still looks great, but (1)I’m wondering if I should move it inside for the Winter? I don’t really want to cut it back unless you think that would be the best thing for it.
Two more questions:
(2) It has never bloomed – not even once – and never even gotten flower buds. Am I doing something wrong?
(3) It has zillions of “suckers” on it. Should I be taking them off of it, or is that normal? (By “suckers” I’m referring to the little tiny leaves growing off the big stalks between the big leaves. (On tomato plants we call them suckers.)
Thanks for your help again in advance!

I acquired 2 very large Angel Trumpet’s from a friend, because they didn’t have the room to put it indoors during winter, we live in MI. I put them in my walkout basement next to the sliding door so it can get sun. I’d say both of these trees are about 7 ft tall each and in very large pots. When i got them they were blooming like crazy, until recently. I water them once a week currently, there’s new growth on them (leaves and branches), however some of the small branches are turning yellow, and the leaves are drying out and falling off. The leaves aren’t yellow though, just the branches. I dont really know much about them, but i dont want them to die and i dont really know how much i’m suppose to be watering them during the winter, and i’m worried about the yellow branches. Any recomendations would be nice.
I recently moved my Brugmansia indoors for the winter. Its final bud opened a couple of days ago. The scent was so strong from sundown until full day light that I was dizzy most of the evening. As the flower aged, the evening aroma lessened, thankfully. My questions are this: are nocturnal creatures this plant pollinators? could the aroma make me too dizzy to function normally?
Winterover Brug in marginal area
I have a beautiful Brug. planted in the ground. I live in N. Texas. I have never fertilized this plant and have had no problems. My plant is about 6 feet tall and 8 ft. wide. Do I have to bring this plant inside for winter, or can I cover it and mulch around roots and leave outside?
Hello! Just found this place of brug-lovers and I confess.. I am addicted to them. I live in Romania, ever heard of it? I’ve got 12 Brugmansia trees that have been planted outside in the garden and did’t go well. I replanted them in big pots at the end of August. They began growing and ar eso beautiful now, full of flower buds but had to bring them inside as the weather got really cold and I feared I could lose them. And now, the buds fall down… What can I do to stop them from falling? I fed them regularly till now.
Hi…great information here! Thank you!
I am getting ready to overwinter two brugmensia plants. Neither of them flowered, but I realize that I wasn’t treating them very well. I’d like to give it another try next summer. Can I re-pot them into smaller containers before bringing them indoors? Also, I keep reading that they can be cut back before being brought in. How far down do I trim and do I just leave the stalk? Each grew about four feet on a single stalk.
I was given Brugmansia seeds from my brother, this is his favorte flower and wanted to share them with me.
I did get them growing, but it is September in Vermont where I live. I need you advise and help to get them through the winter.
I have them in a southern window that all my plants thrive in.
There are that are 6-8″ now. Do each get one pot?
thank you so much for your advise.
Brugmansia growing tip
I have one of these plants… i cut them and put them in water to let them root.. when they have plenty of white roots then i plant them in soil. when i water the plant I also give the leaves a good shower…
I just love this plant. If leaves fall of.. they will grow again… mine have fallen off 2 or 3 times during the winter because i live in northern Ontario… not enough sun… but come spring the leaves come back. this year it has 50 flowers… it is just a beautiful plant.
i recently bought a brug. and it flourished… though still quite small.. it now has two large flowers unfurling…i have it on the indoors window at moment to bring on the flowers..as it had one outter flower casing chwed by a snail .. my query is.. why did the younger buds drop off? i had three small top buds… and they simply dropped off… yet the big ones are progressing ..almost opened.. i doubt that i will get new buds now as the weather here in north england is dulling down and cooling… i water it well and fed it.. blood and fish bonemeal… any help appreciated ..
I’m new to this site, and am impressed with the amount of Datura chat that is here. Anyway, I have several Datura’s (the upright huge white flowers kind) and I have taken cuttings from them,( mainly to maintain their size) and put the cuttings in plain water. So far it looks like they’re actually rooting. DO I have to use a rooting medium or will this do?
Thank you so much for responding to my question. I will buy something that is more potent (as soon as payday comes around.) In the meantime, how often can I spray it with what I have on hand without hurting the brugmansia?
I have two Brugs that are about 6-7 months old and they have grown about 2 feet high but are toppling over. They are a bit spindly and I’m not sure how to prune them. They look very healthy and the leaves are very green. Do I need to cut them back at all? Are they simply too tall to support themselves?
Hi Alexa
Is this plant going to winter outdoors? It sounds as if they would benefit from a pruning. Prune your brugmansia when the branches form a “Y”, which yours may already have.
White fly
I’ve just transplanted my first Angel Trumpet. The largest stalk is 2 ft. tall and the newest one is 1 ft. tall. It had been grown in a quart size container and transplanted into a large (16″ diameter) pot about 2 weeks ago. There is another soon-to-be stalk just coming up. It has several leaves on each stalk (including the brand new one), and has new leaves about every other day. I’ve fed it only once, when I transplanted it into the large pot. I haven’t needed to water it as we’ve had some rain about every other day. That’s it’s history.
Now, my problem is white flies (I think). I sprayed it about 1-1/2 weeks ago. Then again yesterday and then again today (because of a heavy rain yesterday, and a new crop of white flies.) They (or something) have been eating two of it’s leaves and I’ve found them on top and on bottom of all the leaves. The spray I’m using says its good to get rid of white flies. I bought it at Wal-Mart last year (maybe it has expired?). It is Garden Safe Fungicide (Clarified Hydrophobic Extract of Neem Oil – 0.9%, and Other Ingredients – 99.1%.) Per instructions on the bottle I have sprayed the leaves above and below until it drips.
I feel sure I shouldn’t have to spray it every day. If this spray is a good one for ridding it of white flies, then I will assume it has expired and just buy some new. Is this a good spray for them? If not, could you tell me what I should get? Any other advice about growing this plant will be appreciated too. Thank you for your help.

I have just planted an angel trumpet tree and live in southern CA., it gets really hot here and the leaves wilt during the day but seem fine in the evening, I put an unbrella over the tree, but still wilts during the day…is this normal?? what should i do?
Hello, I have 3 trumpets. One plant has 3 opened blooms on it (orange) but the other buds are falling off before they ever open. I live in Jacksonville Fla. Can you please help me correct this problem before all my new buds fall off? I water every day, and I have each one in 30 gal buckets. They get morning sun until noon.
Thank you
I have a datura over grown on a property we just moved to, It has to be moved in the next 2 weeks as we are excavating that whole area.. What do you suggest? Can I take cuttings and move the whole plant or is that too much stress?
Brug cuttings
Hello Brug lovers,
I have just bought two established Brug cuttings and planted them each in well drained pots and have fed them with Miracle Grow and watered regularly. They have been in the pots for approx three weeks. One of them seems ok but the other one’s leaves are starting to turn yellow and one of them has mottled brown spots on it. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I live in South East (Kent) of the UK and they are both in full sun position.
Thanks

Hi all! We have a brugmansia in our backyard. I want to plant some herbs around the house, and there is a great patch near the brugmansia. Should I be concerned about planting something edible near it?
Thanks!
I have a Brugmansia, I took cuttings and the new leaves that are coming are all curled up and almost plastic in texture. Why are they going this. HELP….I need help. I live in Canada and have ben told i can’t receive slips, only seed. Is there no supplier in Canada that provides slips.
Thank you for considering this request.

Hi,
I have a yellow angel’s trumpet in a sunny spot of my front yard in South Florida. It used to grow lots of beautiful yellow flowers, but now it has been infected by some pests. Some leaf became yellow and some other have just holes like they were bit, and the trunk looks like sick. I water it every morning and I spray it with a pesticide every week but, it seems doesn’t work. Do you have some suggestion to solve the problem?
Transplanting Bruggs
Hi, I have a question for you. I have 2 Angel Trumpets in my flower bed that need to be moved. What is the best way to transplant them and what time of year is best, I live in north Alabama.
Hi,
I live in the tropics. The climate can be hot and wet. I have just got a brug and am going it in a pot. I would like to place it on the ground and I wonder if it may be too hot for the plant.
Not blooming
I do not know as it has never flowered. It does keep growing, I keep cutting it back.
Hi…I have a question rather than a comment. I love brugmansias, I have had a wide variety of colours but one plant in particular I cannot get to flower, it just keeps growing tall. I have cut it back but again it grows back without flowering. This has been going on for three years…any suggestions?

Winterover Brugmansia
Hello-
I live in Portland, Oregon and I am just starting to grow these beautiful plants. I have a grouping of 5 of them that grew well in the ground over the summer and bloomed profusely. They are now about 6 feet tall, and I am wondering if I can mulch the roots and winter them over? Should I cut them back any? I believe I am in zone 8-9. Any help would be appreciated!
I have a new angel trumpet I got this it was covered with blossoms and then they all fell off but one it was real pretty. How can I get the blossoms from falling off
well, i sprayed some catepillar stuff, but then the plant did its initial flowering. then i sprayed some malathion to kill a spider mite infestation. two days after the malathion spraying i started giving it brief foliar showers of fresh water in the unusually hot afternoons. i thought it might be the malathion, but i have now noticed several other burgs in my neighborhood doing the same thing. note: this particular tree was pretty messed up when i got to it. no flowers and only a few leaves. the leaves are doing great and there is lots of new growth. i have also started weekly feedings of a mild, balanced fertilizer. what n-p-k induces the most dramatic flowering? i’ll keep trying. s
I have… well, had a large Brugmansia in my back yard in South Louisiana. It was very tall and flowered constantly throughout the spring and summer. As we didn’t have a true frost last winter, we were worried about pruning and left the plant as is. As a result, the branches were extremely thick and heavy. We just suffered a very strong 24-hour period of storms which resulted in our Brugmansia splitting in two at the roots, with each half of the plant laying opposite the other.
Is there anything we can do to revive this beautiful plant? We’re newbies with this plant. Who am I kidding? We’re newbies with plants in general. Thanks!
Shriveled leaves and no blooms
My Angel Trumpet is now growing small shriveled looking green leaves. I have watered and fertilized regularly. At the beginning of the season I had a slug problem. Also, I have not had any flowers this year.
Hi Carmel, I live in GA and see holes in my leaves also. I can never actually see any pests on it though. I have heard that slugs/snails love them but I dont see any trails. It has to be moths, or some kind of nocturnal caterpillar.
Just some ideas and one question for those that love this plant:
I had some troubles with my Brug when planted in the ground, so I transplanted it to a wine barrel, and it loves it. I’ve also pruned mine to a tree form, and it’s natural growth creates a nice 8′ wide canopy which makes for a spectacular flower display.
I’d also suggest planting where evening breezes will carry the intoxicating fragrance to where people can appreciate it. Mine is 30′ away from the entrance, and it is immediately noticable.
My question is what feeds on the flowers? I’ve heard that bats are visitors, and its nightime fragrance would support that, or perhaps moths. Anyone know?
Enjoy!
Hi, all good tips above. Thanks.
I’m having trouble with my yellow brug this year (3yrs-old, 3ft tall with lots of Ys, located in Germany, on balcony in 14inch pot, well watered with drainage, fertilized regularly). It’s producing lots of blooms , but the leaves are not like previous years. Small leaves start growing, but turn yellow and fall off. Some leaves make it to a medium size. There is clear damage on most branches – cracked surface, in one case exposing the ‘core’ of the plant – some sort of disease? I sprayed it with commercial insecticide a month ago since most of our plants had pests, but no sign of pests now.
Also, I transplanted two branches in smaller pots this spring, and their leaves are big and beautiful (two months later: they’re starting to produce blooms that are bigger than the plants are!).
Thanks for any help.
I have a 3 year old brugmansia and apparently I was unaware that the drain hole was blocked and caused all of the leaves to drop off. I’m not sure how long it sat in the water but at least 5/7 days. What would be the best way to try and revive this plant, or can it be saved? It produced over 80 flowers this spring so you can see this is a pretty good size potted plant. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you, Russ
I live in SE corner of UK. I have a number of Brugmansia and one Datura growing in pots in a sunny rear garden. They are doing well with huge green leaves, however something is taking large bites out of the leaves. I can see no evidence of snail trails nor any sign of caterpillars. What is the range of munchers that eat these plants in UK? P.S. in the interim, I’ve just sprayed plants with a systemic insecticide.
Yours sincerely Mike Foster
A systemic insecticide will take care of many insects.
ok i am ganna be recieving brugmansia in about 2-4 days. i know that native american shamans as well as all other religions in the world has partaked in this psychotropic plant. i’ve read up on Datura inoxia tried to propagate from seed didnt work. so then i wanted a live plant. so i ordered it(not before researching) and i know that the toxins varies from plant to plant climate to climate. but would i go and do somthing wrong by eating 2 leaves????
I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE BRUGMANSIA PLANT. I BUY SOME ROOTS FEW DAYS AGO BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. SHOULD I POT IT WITH SOIL OR USE JUST WATER? I DONT KNOW PLEASE HELP
Plant the roots in some good potting mix that drains well and water.
Hi,
I have a brugmansia in Zone 11 (Vieques, PR). He is so sad. There was very little new growth from September to December so I repotted him again. He seems a little happier and is starting to put out new leaves. Someone here told me that my Brug will not do well in a zone 11 as there is not enough of a temperature differencial. Is that true? He is watered at least twice a week and gets a weekly dose of fertilizer. I had such great success with brugmansias in NC and I cannot figure out what is wrong.
My Brugmansia is inside in the Northeast in a south facing window. The leaves are becoming mottled and some are falling off. where the leaves meet the stems I see sticky drippy looking substance and at the nmodes there is weblike substance, tho I cannot see any spider mites or other. Please help! Thank you
Wintering brugmansia
I have a nicely growing Brugmansia in a container outdoors in Southern California. I am wondering what its winter care should be in the Southern California climate.
I purchased my first three Angel Trumpets this past summer (white, pink & purple) so I guess you could consider mine “babies; their no more than 2ft. high including their pots. Just recently I’ve noticed that every several days a leaf (yes one leaf) will yellow and fall off within three to four days time. They are potted in miracle grow and are watered every couple of days. Also, I’ve done my research and have found that I have small colonies of white flies. I first treated my plants with a light spraying of Bayer rose and plant insect killer and three days later the white flies were back and more numerous. What can I do about the occasionally yellow leaf and the while flies? Anything else you can tell would be help too. These are my first Angel Trumpets.
Thank you!
Hello! I have a peach coloured Brugmansia that I bought this spring 08 as a freshly sprouted cutting. It has been growing happily outside all summer long. I did not fertilize it, but it was still doing great untill a few weeks ago when some leaves started to slowly turn yellow. I also just inspected it and found aphids and whiteflies, which I promptly took care of. Now I realize that I should have been fertilizing it, but at the same time I have heard that it shouldn’t be fertilized in fall/winter when I take it inside. Should I feed it now or not? Also, I was wondering when I should repot it. My Brugmansia is only about a foot tall (though it is of a miniature variety that grows to four feet max) and in a two gallon pot. Thank you!
I have 3 brugmansia – how do you pronounce the name? I live in Minnesota, so they are brought inside in the fall. All have bloomed and all have many buds on them now, but the leaves have yellowed & many are curled up, which has never happened before. It has been quite chilly for several nights. Could this cause the leaf curl?
Thanks so much for the advice on cutting the taproot then babying the plant for several weeks. It actually looks quite good and healthy now, even with that taproot exposed (about 10 inches). I need to be gone for the month of July and somebody will be watering my yard, so I doubt there’ll be much “babying.” That being the case, I think I’ll wait until I get back to do my taproot surgery. Thanks again for your response.
Are you in an area where you can plant it in the ground? If so you may not need to cut the taproot.
I pulled an overturned potted brugmansia up from under a pile of the neighbor’s brush. After retrieving it, I realized that the long tap root had grown out of the pot’s drain hole and is now exposed.
Can I cut this root or do I need to do something else to save the plant?
Thanks
In my earlier post I forgot to mention that the tap root wasn’t just growing out of the drain hole, it had apparently begun growing in the soil. In freeing the pot from the brush, I assumed that the tugging required to lift the pot was because of the brush, otherwise, I would have taken better precautions.
What are my chances of saving this plant?
Brugmansia My 2 year old brug is producing lots of buds and last week it produced a beautiful big flower. The flower is already dead. It started getting brown around the tips of the bloom then it moved further up till it fell off. Last year I had one flower all season and the same exact thing happened. I water 3 times a week in california (70 degrees recently). What can I do to save the rest of my beautiful buds? Advice please!!
Wintering brugmansia
I have a Brugmansia plant in my back garden and need to know what to do with it in the winter. It is planted in the ground so i can not bring it indoors, what do i need to do to keep it safe for the winter?
Wintering brugmansia
I live in zone 7B and have had brugmansias in the ground all winter for about 5 years. Someone at the nursery said do not cut the stalks off during the winter so I wait until spring when I see new growth coming from the ground to cut the old stalk off. It is so ugly all winter that I am wondering why it is necessary to leave it. Is it really necessary?
Root pruning
I live in Southern Spain and grow pink, lemon and white Brugmansia. It is very hot in summer, sometimes above 40 degrees but cold in winter, down to minus 12. I grow all my plants in pots. You mention root pruning which I would like to try as they are too big now to move. What time of year should I do this and how?
I got my yellow brugmansia a year ago and it grew well inside the house in a pot. It bloomed in December 2006 and then in late January 07 it started to get many yellow leaves and almost all have dropped off leaving a few at the top which are half green. It had been by a south window so moved it to an east window in case the sun had been too hot. We are at 8400 ft altitude. I have watered, used Miracle Gro and don’t know anything else to do. Should it be repotted, pruned back, or ???? Help.

Poisonous
Angel Trumpet: How careful do I need to be handling an Angel Trumpet Tree? My husband wants me to get rid of it because its poisonous! If we brush against it or use our hands to pick up it’s leaves could we become sick?? I have spent 5 hours researching internet looking for some answers. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Marilou
This will be the second winter our brugmansia has endured in zone 6. We were told by the seller last fall to cut it back to a “stump” about two feet tall and keep it watered in the garage. This past spring it sprouted and grew but it was a completely new sprout, not from the old wood. It seemed to do OK this summer, but I’m wondering if I should a) do the same this winter, b) cut it back even shorter since it seemed to do OK, or c) leave more as your article seems to suggest.

TANYA
yellow leaf drop
I live in Las Vegas, NV, the weather since I bought my brug maybe three weeks ago has been between 75-90 during the day, and 65-75 during the night. I have watered it every day, it has never dried out. It was blooming when I bought it and now after a couple of weeks without is starting to bloom heavily again, but leaves all over the plant are turning yellow and dying now, for about a week and a half. It had a fairly heavy aphid and mite problem, which I subdued with insecticidal soap last week. Could the insecticidal soap have caused the leaf die off? I know from reading others posts on leaf yellowing that there are many possible causes. There is one other thing, my 3-4 foot brug has a new tree sprouting up from the roots, about 2 inches from the trunk, I have let it grow thus far, not knowing if I should or not. Could this new baby brug be sapping the big one’s energy and causing the leaf die off? Should I eliminate it? Or is there a way to remove it and replant it? Many questions, I know, thank you for any help you can give me.
Propagate from cuttings
How do you take stem cuttings from the Brugs, and which part of the plant is best to use?
